I think the best course of protection for future hassles is to get a copy of the statute stating what the acceptable noise level is and load a DB app in your phone. That should dispel any notion of what seems to be too loud, assuming you are under that limit....., then of course I wouldn't bring that up.
As usual, I would rather hear from kalihicop to chime in with his rendering of what the best way to handle any roadside dispute to avoid ticketing.

Modified exhaust (too loud), tinted lic plate cover.

It was probably the dark tinted license plate covers that attracted attention. Got to watch for those things and smoke tinted tail lights along with legal window tint then you shouldn't have any problems. Just bad luck and timing.
