one more question for all the fox body builders, what do you reccomend explorer gt40 or explorer gt40p? i have done the research into which has what but what are the real pros and cons of each? are the power gains the same or less? pretty much if you were doing what i am doing, what would you do?

If you want "less hassle" as far as header/spark plug boot clearance, go with the gt40. Unless you already have or will buy a set of headers that can provide enough clearance for your spark plugs, then go with gt40p heads. As-cast, the "p heads" have a slight air flow advantage and a smaller combustion chamber which will bump up your compression slightly. Power-wise, both are very similar to each other.

If it was me, I would go the aluminum head route.  I little more expensive, but you get much larger
valves, better air flow, less hassle with headers, lighter weight, and better heat dissipation.  The GT40
was the original "old school" upgrade, but since then there have been so many refinements to head
design.  Save up and get the better stuff and do it once.

I have thought about this route and I know that its much smarter, but I am shooting for a goal of 12.99s with modified ford manufactured parts while keeping it street legal. It's gonna cost me a lot more in the long run, but it's just a weird goal I want to accomplish

Nah, it's all good.  I have the 1993 Cobra intake on mine with the Edelbrock
aluminum heads.  Crane 2040 (E-303) cam on mine.  Now this was after having
the Edelbrock Performer 5.0 intake on it.  Why did I take it off?  Because I like
the look of the Ford parts.  LOL

You're not weird, just a typical Mustang Melvin like the rest of us.  LOL

Hmmmm.... I was just telling someone else that this is one of the regrets that I have when I started putting parts into the car.  After all the machine work, new springs and seals.... I have almost as much into the heads as a set of aluminum ones.... (if you cheap it out it could be a lot less)

I believe the power gains and weight savings by going with for example an afr 165 head would make much better sense.

if youre gonna boost the car later, go with the 40s instead of the 40p.

......just my opinion.. Smiley

Yeah I am planning on doing all the port work my self and only have a shop install the springs and retainers, probably gonna stay with stock valves for now.
