Title: Still Looking for a Stang.
Post by: tazmanhawaii on June 01, 2018, 11:16:51 AM
I'm still in the market for a Mustang.  Decided it has to be a V8 and yes I'm still looking for an auto trans.  Date ranges 1965-1970, 1992-1993, 2002-2016.  I have looked at and driven a couple of the new Eco-boost cars, fun, lots of power, but no rumble.  Still searching CL every day.

Gonna look at an '06 S197 tomorrow.  Anything in particular I should look for?  Car is Legend Lime, black interior, GT and has 89,000 miles.  Let me know.

is it stock?
has it been retuned?
airbag recall done?
as long as the Mustang hasn't been abused, the S197 platform is pretty durable
good luck!  :shaka:

3 valve 4.6 GTs are pretty affordable and in some ways have a better sound to them with the right exhaust mods.  Only thing to make sure of is don't go crazy with boost on a stock bottom end, meaning no 20lbs and expect it to survive.  Most of the suspension components are similar to the 2010 to 2014 models.  The only thing is the door panels vinyl falling off the 2005-2009 models.  Easily fixed with a little elbow grease and contact cement.  Engine building is much simpler than the 4 valve coyote, 2 cams rather than 4, a little less complexity.  A much better platform than the fox or SN-95 models.  Plus, can't beat the retro look, which is why I still have a hard time with the S-550 looks....

Yeah, I like the retro look of the S197's.  I really like the S550's and the Coyote motor already has enough horse power for me.  What I'd like to find tho, if I'm gonna buy an S197 would be a 2008/09.  The hunt continues and I will be in one here purty soon.  Just gotta keep looking.

if you're looking to get an auto, the tune on my dad's 2008 really made the auto feel 100% better
stiffer shift points and better low end torque
stock was kind of sluggish, but after the tune, it can chirp 3rd now.  not that I'm driving my dad's GT fast or anything like that, you know onramps you gotta get up to speed.   :lookaround:
good luck with your quest!  :shaka:

Yeah, S197 with rims/tires, exhaust, handheld tuner, cai and nice stereo, that's what I want to get into.  After seeing what Buzzy did to his S197, that made me want one more. I figure I'm comfortable spending $12,000 to $15,000 on an S197 if I have to include engine and/or trans rebuild.  An S550 GT would cost more which I'm willing to pay for the right one.  Sometimes I hate that I'm so picky about the car, small stuff can be taken care of.  Searching every day.  Thanks for the input!

Hey Larry, what about a 13-14 GT?  if you can swing one with low mileage.....

That's another alternative.  Still an S197, but with better 5.0 motor.  Just keeping my options open.  Could be in 2016 -2017 Ecoboost, drove a couple, but the lack of the proper sound and no after market exhaust will help, had to walk away.  The search continues.

Honolulu Ford has 2014 GT premium, 40k+ miles, 6R80 auto, listed at 21k. Auto Source has a 2012 with 47k miles, auto, listed at 19k and some change.  Saw them through Car.com....the 2014 is Silva, the 2012 is White.
I kind of remember you were looking for an auto...the 2014 is pretty sweet as it's a GT premium, so leather, 19" wheels and possibly the upgraded sound system.

Seeing how this Mustang has been on the island since it was new in 1991, does anyone have any information on it?  Here is the link, https://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/cto/d/91-mustang-lx/6676584187.html.  Mahalo!

No more pics yet.  2004 Mach 1, Dark Shadow Gray, automatic.  Now, to change out the headlights, do some front end work and stop the slight oil leak, that's the first stuff on the list.  It's currently got Flowmaster's, other than that it's stock.  Car started out in Arizona, then to Louisiana then Hawaii.  It's got 59780ish miles.

Mighty nice ride.  Low mileage too.  I had Borla Stingers on my former 2003.  Started with welded in flow master 44's and later did the Borla.  Sounded good with the cats, without cats the 4 valves sound raspy to me.  Just my opinion.  Glad you found something a little out of the ordinary.  The shaker retro thing is just cool.  Hell, even Dodge took the hint and have it on the Challenger.  Hope to see it sometime maybe at then next cruise night.  If I'm correct the 2003 had the black cam covers, the 2004 had unfinished aluminum and the 40th anniversary fender badging.  Plus the 2003 had valve guide issues on the earlier production models, the 2004's had the revised heads so should be no problem there. Plus the last of the new edge models.....very cool 😎

Yep, very happy with it.  The front end squeaks and groans when turning and over bumps.  Thought it might be ball joints, but when I looked under it, it has new a-arms and ball joints.  Gonna have have it in at work this Friday and have it checked out.  Small oil leak from the nut under the oil filter, ust gotta pull it out and put something like rtv on it.  Clean interior and engine compartment is not too bad.  Car is stock except for the weld in Flowmasters.  Gonna change those, just not sure which system yet.  Ordered new headlights, after school last night, the current lights aren't bright enough.  Planning mild mods, nothing crazy.
