1996 F150 Speedometer Needle Erratic
« on: December 24, 2012, 03:42:54 PM »
Aloha!  My truck is freakin out on me!  I just bought her a month ago and haven't driven her enough to care about the speedometer needle, but here goes.....

The needle jumps all over the place on anything above 35-40mph.  I've read all over different forums about the speed sensor located in the rear diff (pumpkin) and just replaced it with a brand new one.  The old one I pulled out looked pretty much OEM (nasty, rusty, dirty, oily, etc)  The diff was rebuilt before I bought it.  Actually, that was part of the deal.....The guy selling couldn't sell it cuz of the bad diff.  It was rebuilt, put on Craigs, and I bought it.  According to different forums, there are basically 3 things controlling the speedometer.....Rear diff speed sensor, Tone ring, and CPU (Guage cluster?).

So....after replacing the speed sensor (easiest thing first, right?), the needle is even more erratic!

Suggestions?
Help!
Thanks
