Mustang Rear Disc brake on rangers
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:54:07 AM »
So today I installed rear disc brakes off a 2004 V6 Mustang onto my 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4.
I needed to change my shoes and drum and decided to disc brake it since fox body's can why not rangers with similar axles.
Parts needed are
Rear caliper
Caliper brackets
Caliper bracket mounts
Dust shields
Rotors and pads
Anti moan brackets
Standard to metric brake line adapter or new brake lines
I got all parts from the junk yard. Pads and rotors were pretty new about 90% left
I resurfaced the rotors just a little just to get rid of the rust.
For Brake lines I drove everywhere for some kind of adapter or new lines. Finally found some jeep rear stainless steel braided lines with same 10mm banjo bolt and female fitting on the other end that fits the OEM 3/16 lines
Junkyard $90
Braided Brake lines $119
New hard lines $8 a pair 3/16 - 12"
1/2 Cooper tube $5.99 city mill
8 washers $0.23 each city mil
80-90 gear oil $6.79 each. (Gonna need to remove diff cover to remove your axles)

First take the caliper to axle mount and cut to modify it for a ranger
I took a flash card and cut it 2 7/8" wide

Now you mark it and cut it like so.

Here's a picture of the rotors

Now remove your complete drum assembly

Once removed. Install your modified bracket so the calipers would be on the rear of the axle. Mount the left bracket on the right and the right bracket on the left. Also it goes behind the axle mount not infront like a mustang.

Install dust shield. Optional.

Install rotors and caliper w/bracket and anti moan bracket

Anti moan bracket

Before you run your new brake lines install parking brake cable. I used 1/2 copper tube cut at 3 5/16" long with a 7/16 washer.

These are the SS braided lines I got at 4wheelparts. It also comes with a bracket to secure the line to the axle which I welded.

Install brake lines.

Bend new 3/16 hard lines. You can bend it how ever you want.

Now bleed your brakes and boom. You're done.

My caliper brackets were hitting the rotors so you may have to shim them with some washers like this

Final product. Sorry this photo was taken at night.

It makes changing brakes easier in the future and gives you more options when time to replace. Little more stopping power when hauling a load or trailer. Driving on a daily you won't feel the difference much.

I got more pix that I'll post later. Also if you planning on doing the swap I got extra copper tubing. Used parts came from ABC junk yard behind cutter dodge pearl city. I suggest you go early because it gets hot out there. Really hot. I went one day and only removed one side. I said fawk it. I'll come next week. Paid $40 for the driver side. Went back another week and got the passenger side. Paid $50. Idk it cost more this time. BRING drinks.
